A Hong Kong staple with branches scattered across the city, Aberdeen Fishball King 香港仔魚蛋王 has earned its place in the hearts of noodle lovers. No fuss, no frills; just bowls of warm, comforting noodles that capture the simple joy of everyday eating.

Today we are turning our attention to the North Point branch, our personal favourite among Aberdeen Fishball King’s many outposts. Each one has its own quirks, but this is the spot we always find ourselves coming back to. Tucked just opposite the lively Chun Yeung Street Market, where tram rattles past and locals weave through the bustle, it is easy to miss if you are not looking. Step inside and you will likely be met with a brisk “Have a seat!” before an order is taken within seconds. There is no small talk here, as the staff are busy, and that is part of the charm. You will often share a table with strangers, as is the Hong Kong way, and that is exactly what we love about it. A place where good noodles and everyday life meet in the most honest way.

As for the noodles, our usual order never changes. We opt for rice noodles with beef brisket (HKD$42), beef tendon (+HKD$10) and an extra handful of green herbs, a fragrant mix of spring onion, coriander and celery. The brisket is impossibly tender, especially if you come a little later in the day when it has been simmering for hours. The tendon is chewy and gelatinous in the best way, leaving you with the quiet satisfaction that your collagen intake has been well taken care of. The noodles have a gentle bounce, soaking up the broth with every bite. That broth is rich and deeply umami, the kind that hits the exact spot you have been craving without even realising it. A spoonful or two of their house-made chilli sauce brings it all to life. Wash it all down with a quaint glass bottle of Coca Cola (HKD$10) and you've just had the perfect meal for a total of HKD$62.
