August truly sped by like a very hot and very sweaty typhoon. With the kids going back at school, you’d think the rest of Hong Kong would take a breather, but it's quite the opposite! The city is in full throttle, with no shortage of things to do this September. From fashion events and laughs at the Hong Kong International Comedy Festival, to Y2K parties, pub choir, good food, and the return of the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance - September is non-stop, and we absolutely love it. Fashion takes the stage this September as CENTRESTAGE returns to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The annual showcase brings together around 270 brands from 24 countries and regions, with more than 30 fashion shows and presentations, with plenty of new names to discover. This year’s opening gala, CENTRESTAGE ELITES, will spotlight Hong Kong-born creative director Kit Wan and his multidisciplinary studio, KIT WAN STUDIOS, whose futuristic designs blur the lines between art and fantasy. There’s also a brand new Hype² section, combining fashion and lifestyle labels founded by local celebrities and influencers, whilst Korea takes centre stage as this year’s Featured Partner with its biggest-ever pavilion at the event.

Yu Lan Cultural Festival, 4 - 6 Sep
One of Hong Kong’s traditional festivals, Yu Lan Cultural Festival, or Hungry Ghost Festival, is an ancient tradition observed during the seventh month of the lunar calendar. In Chiu Chow tradition, this is a time to honour ancestors and remember those who have passed, with food and other items being offered to wandering spirits. The festival in Victoria Park brings these traditions to life through an array of cultural activities, including workshops, exhibitions, and performances. There are also traditional offerings and treats, as well as an interactive theatre experience. This is a fun way to learn more about one of Hong Kong’s perhaps lesser-known traditions, while seeing how it is still celebrated nowadays.

Chin Teng x PUC's DOGGIE BOOGIE, 6 Sep
Following the incredible success of the 23 August PUSSIES Adoption & Rave, Chin Teng is back with another afternoon of snacks and drinkies, and this time for the benefit of dawgs in need! PUC HK will be bringing along pups looking for their forever homes, while Chin Teng serves up delicious bites and exclusive drinks, sponsored by Black Kite Brewery and Holzer Original. Support from Pawsitive comes in the form of a demonstration workshop for new pet owners on force-free, reward-based methods to build trust and communication. As the afternoon comes to an end, the space will once again transform into a party area, with T SOUL hitting the decks and making sure everyone is having a good old boogie. 50% of the net profits will go to PUC, so you can spend your dollars knowing that they're helping a great cause. CAVALLUNA, 8 - 13 Sep
CAVALLUNA is coming to Hong Kong for the first time this September, bringing horses, riders, dancers, and impressive tricks to the stage. The show follows a young girl on a magical journey, with 54 horses taking part across the production, including Portuguese Lusitanos, Spanish Andalusians, Frisians, Arabians, and mini ponies! Having entertained more than 9 million people across Europe over the past 25 years, the Hong Kong shows will also be a little different, with local singer-songwriter Sinnie Ng joining the cast as the production’s first-ever live vocalist. She’ll perform “I Can See You” alongside the horses during every show. CAVALLUNA has also partnered with the Autism Partnership Foundation, with young people from APF’s Youth Development Centre getting the chance to volunteer at the show, while part of the ticket revenue from selected tickets will be donated to the charity. This is a perfect event for the whole family to enjoy.

Golden Phoenix × Kowloon Spirits × Avoca: Made in Kowloon Vol. 2, 9 September

As part of AVOCA’s Made in Kowloon series, this event allows us to view Kowloon through three different perspectives, all in one place. Golden Phoenix Restaurant, the neighbourhood steakhouse serving iconic iron-plate steaks since 1969; Kowloon Spirits, Hong Kong’s very first craft whisky distillery; and AVOCA’s bar and kitchen teams are joining forces for one night only to serve up four exclusive cocktails (HKD$138 each), made with Kowloon Spirits whisky and vodka and inspired by the old-school flavours of Hong Kong’s steakhouse culture. To complete the experience, Golden Phoenix and AVOCA have also created two exclusive bar bites that reimagine the sizzling steak tradition. This collaboration hits us right in the nostalgia, whilst still feeling of the moment, celebrating old-school charm, homegrown craft, and a modern take on food and drink. FLOCKFEST @ PMQ, 11 - 13 Sep
Beer, music and good times are coming to PMQ this September. Black Kite Brewery brings back FLOCKFEST for three days, bringing together eight breweries from Hong Kong and Japan, with more than 50 beers across 20 taps, including eight exclusive collaboration beers. There’ll also be 13 local music acts, food (including our friends from Chin Teng, who will be serving up nommy noodles and other bits), and workshops happening throughout the weekend, meaning that there is plenty to keep you busy once you've had your fill of beer!

Finis x Purple Rain's "A Harvest Dinner", 16 Sep
FINI’S is teaming up with Purple Rain Wine for a very special five-course dinner, pairing some of FINI’S favourites with five natural wines from some of China’s lesser-known wine regions. The menu starts with anchovy butter crostini and Fini’s pork and beef meatballs, followed by rigatoni alla vodka and crispy three-yellow chicken with mushrooms, amaranth leaves, and lemon. To finish, peaches and cream with yellow peaches, Amaretto cream, and brown butter oat streusel. The wines are just as interesting, with pours from Shaanxi, Yunnan, Hebei, and Qingdao, including an old-vine Muscat, heritage-vine Tempranillo, a fizzy Niagara and honey wine, and a pet-nat made with Black Muscat and Jasmine Spring Tea. An evening that brings together two very different worlds, but in the best way possible: with food and wine.

NO CURFEW CLUB, Y2K PARTY @ AER, 19 Sep
Usher, Britney, Tupac... Do you have goosebumps like we do? No Curfew Club is bringing its Y2K throwback party back to AER, this time being VOL 3: Back To School Edition, with four glorious hours of the good stuff: 2000s R&B, hip-hop, pop, and all the songs you know every single word to. The series is aimed at the 30-and-over crowd, so you can relive the best days and still be home at a respectable hour. 😝 The first two editions were massive hits, and early bird and regular tickets have already SOLD OUT for this one! Don't worry, there are still tickets at the door, but they are LIMITED, so make sure to arrive early if you don't want to miss out.

17th HK International Comedy Festival, until 19 Sep
Hong Kong’s annual comedy festival is back for its 17th year, bringing an international line-up of comedians to TakeOut Comedy in Central until 19 September. With shows running throughout the festival, September’s line-up includes amazing comedians such as Monty Franklin, Maitreyi Karanth, Neema Naz and Sorabh Pant. There’s also a little more reason to head along this year, as TakeOut Comedy is coming up on its 20th anniversary and has sadly announced that its time in Hong Kong is coming to an end. Having been a part of the city’s comedy scene since 2007, and known as Asia’s first full-time comedy club, this would be a good time to support and catch a show before the doors close for good.

Pub Choir: Just Think About It World Tour, 21 September

What started as a small singalong in a Brisbane pub has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, with thousands of people now joining Pub Choir events around the globe. Led by founder Astrid Jorgensen, the idea is very simple! Turn up, learn a popular song in a three-part harmony, and sing it with a room full of strangers. You don't need any choir experience, just bring yourself and your friends and be ready to sing your heart out. This will be Pub Choir's first time in Hong Kong, as part of its Just Think About It World Tour, which is also heading to Tokyo and Singapore before continuing through Europe.

HK Stories Presents: Now or Never, 23 September
HK Stories is back with Now or Never, an evening of real stories told by the people who lived them. The Hong Kong-based storytelling group has been hosting live shows and workshops for years, giving the people of Hong Kong a space to share all kinds of stories: funny, awkward, touching, and everything in between. This time, eight storytellers will take to the stage to talk about moments when they had to make a decision or take some sort of chance. If you've been stuck in a rut of social media and doom-scrolling, or you just want a bit more human connection, this is a lovely event to get you thinking, listening, and even reflecting on your own life a little.

Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance, 24 - 26 September

The Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance is a tradition that started in the 19th century, when a plague spread through the village. Locals created their own dragon, covered in incense sticks, in the hope of driving the plague away and bringing better luck to the village. More than 100 years on, the tradition is still going strong, with hundreds of people carrying a 67-metre-long dragon through Tai Hang, covered in thousands of burning incense sticks and accompanied by different performers. The tradition is now recognised as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, and still represents the hope for a safe and peaceful life. The atmosphere is so unique, and it is most definitely something you should experience whilst in Hong Kong.

If Cantopop gets your blood pumping, then look no further... Cantomania is bringing its Friday+ party to Mirage for a night of old-school favourites and newer hits. The group has become a household name in Hong Kong’s nightlife scene, having played everything from club nights to a sold-out show at M+, so expect an insane crowd and lots and lots of moving those feet. There’ll be free-flow canapés and two drinks included with your ticket, with a VIP table option available if you’re coming with a group.

Asia+ Festival, until November
For the lovers of all things culture, Asia+ Festival is back for its fourth edition this year, bringing artists from more than 30 countries and regions to Hong Kong for three months of performances and exhibitions. While the festival has a main focus on Asia and the Belt and Road regions, there are artists from all over, with Brazil, Czechia, Moldova, and Uruguay among the countries taking part this year. The theme, “Traditions Recast”, looks at traditional arts and culture through new and contemporary ways, with more than 100 performances and events happening across the city. With so many things happening, it is worth having a look through the programme and seeing what stands out for you!
